Your trees have been earning carbon units since the day they went in. Do you know how many?
My Forest is the forest carbon calculator for New Zealand forest owners. Enter each block once and it shows the units earned to date, the units still to come and the MPI charge you will pay, straight from the official ETS default tables.
$99 a year plus GST. That is less than the MPI annual charge on 10 hectares. Card needed to start. Nothing is charged for 14 days, and you can cancel in one click before then.

If you own forest planted since 1990, this number is yours
Post-1989 forest in the Emissions Trading Scheme earns New Zealand Units as it grows. One unit is one tonne of carbon dioxide, and units are worth real money. Could you say today how many units your trees have earned, how many are still to come, or when the earning stops? If not, you usually find out when a return is due, when a block is sold, or when a consultant's invoice arrives.
My Forest puts that number in front of you today. It uses the default carbon tables in Schedule 4 of the Climate Change (Forestry) Regulations 2022 - the same tables the Ministry for Primary Industries uses for forestry in the ETS. If you have less than 100 hectares of post-1989 forest, those are the tables your own emissions returns are based on.
What you see for every block
- Units to date. The carbon stock your block has reached for its forest type, region and age, multiplied by your hectares.
- Units still to come. The projected entitlement for the 2026 to 2030 mandatory emissions return period.
- When earning stops. Under averaging accounting a forest earns up to its average age, which is 16 years for radiata pine. My Forest shows the year your block plateaus.
- What it costs to hold. The MPI annual charge of $10.28 per hectare, worked out for your registered area.
- What it is worth. An indicative value at the current market reference price, clearly marked as indicative.
- The curve. A year-by-year accumulation chart from planting to maturity.
Stop guessing what your forest is worth.

Three details per block. That is all it takes.
You do not need a forestry degree or your MPI login to get started.
Add a block
Name it, choose the forest type and region, and enter the planting year and hectares. Add the carbon accounting area reference if you have it.

Averaging, stock change or permanent forestry. My Forest applies the right cap for each.
Read your position
Units to date, units to come, the annual charge and the accumulation curve for each block, and the totals across your whole forest.
Built for the owner, not the consultant
Forestry advice has its place, and if you have 100 hectares or more you must use field measurement for your returns. But most owners do not need to pay someone by the hour to read a look-up table. My Forest does that arithmetic for you, shows its working, and is there every time you want to check it - before you talk to a buyer, before you thin or harvest, before the next return window opens.
It also keeps your forest beside the rest of your land. Add the farm emissions dashboard and your trees and your stock sit in the same sign-in, so you can see what your land emits and what it stores. When you are ready to sell units, the Carbon Trader marketplace is one link away, and you will arrive knowing exactly what you hold. If you buy units to meet an obligation instead, the ETS obligations dashboard tracks that side.
Who should be using My Forest
- Farm foresters with woodlots, shelter blocks and retired gullies registered in the ETS.
- Owners of small and mid-sized production forests on the default tables.
- Families and trusts who inherited a registered block and need to understand it.
- Landowners weighing up whether a block is worth registering.
- Accountants and advisers keeping forest records for several clients.

Forest carbon questions, answered
How many carbon units does a hectare of pine earn?
It depends on the region and the age of the trees. As an example from the default tables, radiata pine in the Auckland region carries 153 units per hectare at age eight. My Forest looks up the figure for your region and age.
Which forest types does My Forest cover?
Radiata pine in all nine regions of the default tables, Douglas fir, exotic softwoods, exotic hardwoods and indigenous forest.
I have less than 100 hectares. Are the default tables right for me?
Yes. Participants with less than 100 hectares of post-1989 forest use the default carbon tables for their emissions returns, and those are the tables My Forest is built on.
What if I have 100 hectares or more?
You are required to use the field measurement approach for your returns. My Forest is still useful as a planning comparison across your blocks, but your participant-specific tables will give the figures that count.
What is averaging accounting, and when do my units stop?
Under averaging, a forest earns units as it grows up to the average age for its type, then stops. The average age is 16 years for radiata pine, 26 for Douglas fir, 22 for exotic softwoods, 12 for exotic hardwoods and 23 for indigenous forest.
How much is the MPI annual charge?
From 1 July 2026 the annual charge for post-1989 forest land in the ETS is $10.28 per hectare, with a lower rate for forest that qualifies as mature. My Forest works it out for your registered area.
My land is not registered in the ETS yet. Is My Forest still useful?
Yes. Mark the block as not registered and you will see what it would have earned on the default tables, which helps you decide whether registering with MPI is worth it.
When is my next emissions return due?
The current mandatory emissions return period runs from 2026 to 2030, and the final return for it is filed between 1 January and 30 June 2031. You can also file voluntary returns with MPI along the way.
Does Carbon Tracker file my emissions return?
No. Returns are filed with MPI through its own system. My Forest gives you the indicative figures and the record so you know what to expect before you file.
Can I sell the units my forest earns?
Yes. Units issued to you sit in your account in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Register and can be sold. Carbon Trader is our marketplace for buying and selling NZUs.
